DTs are critical equipment located near customer premises and help to step down the grid voltage to usable consumer levels. DT monitoring is essential to ensure reliable power supply to consumers and improve maintenance of associated devices. Kalkitech’s provides its secure, robust and scalable SYNC 2100 series of products with in-built IO modules, wireless communication capabilities and advanced substation automation protocols that are ideal for remote monitoring of DTs. Also, SYNC 2100 comes with the necessary IP ruggedness to withstand the elements. With embedded capabilities such as protocol conversion and low-scale data concentration, the solution is cost effective as it eliminates the need for multiple products. The solution can be customized such that it is compatible with SCADA systems and allows integration of data with distribution management systems of utilities.

Capacitor banks are deployed in the distribution network, either within the station or across the network, and help improve the power factor of the system and thereby overall efficiency. Capacitor banks improve reactive power flow throughout the system by compensating at the origins instead of at a central point. Kalkitech’s automated capacitor bank control unit comprises the SYNC 2111/2121 feeder remote terminal units (FRTUs) and switching control mechanisms connected to three-phase capacitor banks, where the capacitor phase switches are operated by motor controlled load break switches/relays. The micro RTU switches banks and monitors reactive power and voltages of the phases, operation mode selected (auto, manual). Capacitor banks are switched based on the rules configured in the SYNC 2101 micro RTU and existing system parameters (V, KVAr).

Ring main units (RMUs) are critical control devices in the distribution network that allow power to be supplied to consumers from alternative sources when the main source of supply fails. By allowing multi-input multi-output interconnection of the distribution network, RMUs provide redundancy and ensure reliable power supply to end consumers. Each substation will need to monitor 500-600 RMUs and manual control and monitoring of these devices will be tedious. This process can be automated by installing GOC Group’s SYNC 2111/2121 feeder remote terminal units (FRTUs) in the RMUs. GOC Group’s FRTUs come with appropriate communication interfaces and help monitor switchgear status indicators remotely.

Autoreclosers and sectionalizers are located on the distribution network to ensure reliable power supply and helps avert permanent blackouts due to transient faults. Reclosers work in conjunction with sectionalizers. The entire distribution network is divided into different sections for ease of operations and maintenance. These sectionalizers are equipped with dis-connectors or tripping mechanisms that are put into action by a trigger or timer. These sectionalizers do not interrupt current flow unless the fault persists even after the auto-recloser closes the break. GOC Group’s SYNC 2100 series of intelligent remote terminal units (RTUs) provides a field interface to remotely monitor the operations of sectionalizers and auto reclosers. This data is consolidated and transmitted to the data concentrator unit at the control center to be integrated in to the SCADA /DMS operations of the utility.

Fault passage indicators (FPIs) are installed at strategic points on the distribution network and communicate with the control center. When a fault occurs, FPIs transmit the exact position of the faulty section of the network to the control center allowing maintenance crews to be immediately dispatched to the location of the fault. This reduces the duration of blackouts and helps improve customer service. GOC Group’s SYNC 2100 series of intelligent RTUs enable automated remote monitoring of FPIs from the control center and help in speedy restoration of power in case of outages.
