Grid Metering Solutions

With governments across the globe scrambling to increase power production to meet rising demand and the liberalization of the energy sector in many countries, the power transmission sector is characterized by multiple players, both in the private and public sectors,  supplying power to national grids. Also, with the integration of renewable sources of energy, a quick, accurate and responsive monitoring system to measure and account for the power supplied is a business imperative requiring interfacing with substations run by transmission companies.

The GOC Group Grid Metering solution is a secure and highly accurate end-to-end solution encompassing generation, transmission and distribution functions. With this solution, transmission companies can interface with power generators as well as distribution utilities. GOC Group has implemented large grid metering projects, both in India and abroad and is the only large player offering a loaded solution that integrates metering and ABT parameters.

Grid metering systems are installed at substations to measure the quantity of power supplied by generation companies. In view of the significant quantities of power involved, grid meters need to be highly accurate and secure to prevent financial loss to power suppliers. By providing generation data to utilities as well as transmission companies, automated grid meters help them prepare generation schedules and better manage load. Meter data is monitored to identify variations from committed schedules of generation companies and penalize/incentivize the companies for less/more power supplied to the grid.

Grid meters need to be DLMS/COSEM compliant as per the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Kalkitech’s SYNC 500 DLMS/COSEM Metering Protocol Library enables DLMS/COSEM compliance in meters. The grid meters are installed at the interface points to accurately record the quantum of power supplied by power generators. Kalkitech’s SYNC 2000 Data Concentrator Unit consolidates meter data from multiple meters located in remote areas and transmits it to load dispatch centers (LDC) of transmission companies. This provides real time visibility of the power generation/transmission ecosystem which helps in better load management. Additionally, with critical data flowing from grid meters at configured intervals, the LDCs are able to monitor grid stability and prevent adverse events.

At the LDC control centre, Kalkitech’s SYNC 5000 Meter Data Acquisition System or the Meter Head End System receives the data and converts it into a format that can be used by the upstream meter data management system, billing system, ERP system etc. SYNC 5000 also ensures that the latest data is available in the enterprise database or the historian and enables report generation, alarm analysis and configuration, and triggers alerts. Furthermore, SYNC 5000 comes embedded with a basic Geographic Information Systems to provide a map-based view depicting the status of meters on a geographical plane.

The dispatch of power from generation units to distribution utilities is a dynamic process. The LDC serves as an important link in this process and coordinates the power requirements of consumers to ensure seamless supply of electric power. The LDC obtains demand profiles from distribution companies based on which generation companies prepare schedules to ensure reliable supply and regulatory compliance. For instance, The Government of India has introduced the Availability based Tariff (ABT) regime which is a frequency-dependent tariff structure for bulk power suppliers based on a scheme of incentives and disincentives to inculcate discipline at the generation as well as the consumption end.

Kalkitech’s ELTRIX Generation Management module provides a decision support system for plant managers and operators to manage the day to day operational processes linked to power generation. It also eliminates the need for complex manual processing and calculations by plant managers and protects the interests of the generation company in all its energy transactions. The module provides decision support for regulatory compliance and grid code.

Kalkitech’s ELTRIX Dispatch Operations of Power System (DOPS) is an effective tool that empowers system operators to perform multiple business and operational functions such as monitoring and enforcing grid code compliance, scheduling dispatch operations, contingency management, forecasting, energy accounting and billing. ELTRIX DOPS enables LDCs to calculate dispatch schedules, drawing schedules, and requisition to regional LDCs based on merit order dispatch logic. It also automates the short term open access approval process, calculates and publishes total transmission capacity and available transmission capacity data to the state LDC website.

SYNC 500: Metering Protocol Library

Kalkitech’s SYNC 500 DLMS/COSEM Metering Protocol Library is present inside the special energy meters to support the DLMS/COSEM protocol. The library is DLMS User Association certified and enables meter manufacturers to upgrade their meter models to comply with the DLMS/COSEM protocol thereby ensuring interoperability.

SYNC 2000: Data Concentrator Unit

Kalkitech’s SYNC 2000 Data Concentrator Unit (DCU) is an interoperable device with substation ruggedness which collects data from multiple special energy meters located in remote locations and transmits it to the control center.

SYNC 5000: Meter Data Acquisition System

Kalkitech’s SYNC 5000 Meter Data Acquisition System is a server based scalable, secure solution and helps collect meter data from the SYNC 2000 DCU. Kalkitech’s SYNC 5000 can talk to local as well as remote meters over multiple communication channels such as RS232, RS485, RS422, Ethernet Base Tx/Fx 10/100/1000 Mbps, GSM, GPRS, CDMA, PSTN, LPR etc., either directly or through port servers or modems. SYNC 5000 supports multiple standards based protocols including IEC 62056 DLMS/COSEM, Modbus RTU/TCP and selected proprietary protocols. It helps convert the data into a protocol compatible with the upstream meter data management system, billing system, ERP system etc., and manages the database/historian connectivity. It also generates reports, performs alarm analysis and configuration and provides a map-based view that shows the status of meters on a geographical plane.

ELTRIX DOPS

Kalkitech’s ELTRIX Dispatch Operations of Power System (DOPS) Module empowers system operators with an effective tool to perform various business and operational functions such as monitoring and enforcing grid code compliance by constituents, optimally scheduling dispatch operations, contingency management, forecasting, energy accounting and billing. DOPS has the capability to support operations of various deregulated and regulated markets by means of standard information modules, rule & work flow management, and model based interfaces supported by ELTRIX platform.

ELTRIX Generation Management System

Kalkitech’s ELTRIX Generation Management module helps generation companies acquire data from special electric meters and inputs related to ABT based on which the company can calculate its generation schedule. The module also helps generation companies to react proactively to changes in the incentive/penalty schemes under the ABT regime.
